TNO at Holst Centre works with a range of (pre-pilot) thin-film production technologies that have very interesting potential in the fast-growing domain of Next-Generation Battery Technology. The aim is to employ the unique thin-film background of Holst Centre and the state-of-the-art pre-pilot battery production line to contribute to the development & production of next generation technologies such as high-voltage lithium (sodium) metal batteries, solid-state-batteries and metal-air batteries.
TNO at Holst Centre works closely with the, local and international, ecosystem of battery (component) producers on the development of these types of functional devices. The aim of the program is to accelerate the much-needed energy transition while concurrently increasing the earning power of (high-tech) companies active in this domain.
In order to enable the maturation of developed battery technologies, TNO at Holst Centre is setting up a 4 MWh pilot battery production facility located in Helmond, the Netherlands – called the Open Battery Industrialisation Centre (OBIC) in a collaborative effort with VDL ETS and Battery Competence Cluster-NL. In order to guide the translation of development-level battery innovation towards larger scale, realize the pilot production line and run actual pilot production of battery cells, we are looking for a pilot production engineer to support the existing battery team.
Functie-eisen
You will join the Thin-Film Electronics team to develop and realize the department’s program and project portfolio in Next-Generation Battery Technology, leveraging Holst Centre’s strengths in thin and thick film process technology and related technologies. Your daily activities will be varied since you will join a multidisciplinary team that executes multiple programs and projects with partners in the academia and business in parallel. Your technical tasks will involve the translation of smaller scale developments into pilot production (equipment), co-realize the OBIC with your technical input, and realize successful pilot production runs of battery cells.
Your main activities will be to
•Join R&D activities on next-generation battery concepts with a critical look on further upscaling towards pilot production
•Contributing hands-on to the realization of the OBIC by detailing the design from a technical perspective in collaboration with our industrial partners
•Help with selection of location, necessary building auxiliaries and production equipment, with a keen eye on relevant safety aspects as well.
•Development of suppliers relationship for operation of pilot production
•Kickstart and lead OBIC pilot production based on external battery components of partners and/or TNO at Holst Centre developments
•Deliver battery cells upon pre-agreed performance parameter windows in agreement with OBIC partners - with scope for further performance optimization
•Communicate pilot production run manufacturing reports towards customers
•Work in a multidisciplinary, multi-company team.
Competenties
•PhD in battery related subject
•3 - 5 years of experience in a (pilot) production settings in (Li-ion) battery technology, preferably with experience in one or a combination of: battery cell assembly, electrochemical testing, thin film deposition technologies, wet/dry electrode preparation.
•Pro-active and critical attitude with clear goal in mind
•Hands-on, able to organize (practical) work in an efficient and cooperative way
•Excellent multi-stakeholder management in a complex innovation environment, recognizing common interests between commercial and public stakeholders
