As an Analytical Chemist, you will be responsible for delivering expert consultancy, providing ad-hoc support, developing tailored analytical methods, and performing hands-on material characterization. Your deep understanding of chemistry and analytical techniques will be essential to ensure the quality, safety, and compliance of Philips medical devices and personal health products.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Providing expert analysis of polymers, coatings, adhesives, and other materials using advanced analytical techniques such as LC-MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS, FTIR, UV-vis, DSC, TGA.
  • Building and maintaining a strong network in the relevant areas of expertise.
  • Interfacing and collaborating closely with other (technical) disciplines, regulatory experts, biocompatibility officers, toxicologists, and external parties to translate chemical insights into practical solutions.
  • Advising on chemical compatibility, contamination, degradation mechanisms, and lifetime performance of materials used in consumer and medical devices.
  • Developing and validating analytical methods tailored to specific project needs and material type, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility.
  • Regularly benchmark results against current scientific literature to ensure ongoing improvement and alignment with the latest developments
  • Documenting findings in clear, concise reports and presenting results to stakeholders.
  • Staying up to date with relevant chemical regulations (eg, REACH, RoHS, FDA) and supporting compliance efforts including documentation for audits and certifications.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of lab practices, safety standards, and knowledge sharing within the group.

Competenties

To be successful in this role, you bring:

  • Masters or PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience with a broad range of analytical techniques, such as LC-MS, GC-MS, FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, TGA, and spectroscopy.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret complex data sets to generate actionable insights.
  • Familiarity with polymers, coatings, adhesives, and their chemical behavior is a strong advantage.
  • Experience in method development, validation, and documentation according to industry standards.
  • Knowledge of chemical safety, risk assessment, and relevant regulations (eg, REACH, RoHS).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Proactive, hands-on attitude combined with a collaborative mindset, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Fluency in English; Dutch is a plus but not required.

The Philips Physics, Materials & Chemistry Group (PM&C) in Drachten, The Netherlands, is a group of highly skilled experts in several competencies that are key for the Medical Business groups as well as for Personal Health Businesses. The experts cooperate closely in a network with product developers, industrial designers, consumer marketing managers, external partners and with innovative suppliers. PM&C supports the different Philips product categories worldwide in scouting and developing new technologies that enable new product functions and is organized around competences, with two expert groups. One of these expert groups is the group Chemistry & Polymers. The competences in the group are Applied Chemistry, Material/Chemical Analysis and Materials, Molding & Finishing Technologies. The Chemistry & Polymers group consists of about 20 colleagues with diverse and international background having an educational background ranging from vocational to PhD.
