As Knowledge Representation and Domain Specialist within a team that manages and delivers support to a large number of products, you will contribute to the development, maintenance and uses of different thesauri and their related services in order to meet the needs of the product owners.
This entails understanding of product cores, requirements and roadmaps and corresponding taxonomies and services associated with these assets, such as automated NLP and ML solutions that support the products or clients in searching, indexing, enriching and managing their content.
The products range from databases of indexed research literature in geoscience (GEOBASE), to Science Direct Topics Pages, using Elsevier’s taxonomy on all scientific domains (OmniScience) in the back-end. Classification projects include the tagging of research articles against the UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Salary of €3428 per month based on 36 hours.

Fulltime position of 36 hours per week.

We are looking for someone who is familiar with taxonomies and ontologies, and respective best practices in development and maintenance of those. As a person, you have a strong analytical background so that you are able to quickly understand product use cases, needs and requirements, ability to quantify and prioritize issues.

In this position, it is important to have a good eye for detail and systematic work approach.

Personality wise, ideally you are cooperative, service-minded and pro-active approach to working with colleagues inside and outside the department. Next to that, you have strong organizational skills and are accurate and pro-active. You also speak English fluently.

  • MSc or PhD Degree in Environmental Engineering, Geosciences or similar subjects
  • Experience working with Python
  • You already live in The Netherlands and have a valid work permit
  • You are flexible and can handle shifting priorities
  • Experience with GEOBASE is a plus
  • Experience working with taxonomies, ontologies and Semantic Web standards
  • You have a strong focus on quality and are able to work independently.

You will also be expected to support and supervise suppliers, ensuring that the quality standards are continuously met and that the delivery of data occurs in line with product needs.
You need to understand the indexing guidelines or mechanisms and users’ way of searching, or the classification system in order to vouch for the relevant quality of the data delivered by suppliers.
In addition to the aforementioned, you are expected to be able to design and implement QA solutions for taxonomies and to be experienced with existing ontology development best practices: to update and manage thesaurus, discuss new terms with customers, etc.
Finally, you are expected to have a very deep understanding (subject matter expertise) of research in a field related to Engineering (ideally Environmental Engineering) or Geosciences.

You will be joining an enthusiastic team based in the Elsevier’s headquarter office in Amsterdam, reporting to the Manager of KR and Domain Specialist and you will be part of the Research Content Operations division.
